INFO ON FEEDING YOUR PIGLET
Here is the feeding guideline on the back of Mazuri Mini Pig Active Adult.....so going by the higher scale, lets say a pig needs 2% of it's body weight in pellets per day. If you ...have a 10# pig, he weighs 160 oz....2% of that weight is 3.2 oz per food a day. If 1/2 level cup is right at 3 oz weight. then a 10# pig is recommended to have 1/2 cup split into two feedings a day. SO 1/4 cup in am, 1/4 cup at night. So it doesn't take a lot to feed their nutritional needs. This food is completely balanced for them by vitamins/minerals/protein.
Since pellets serve the COMPLETE nutritional guideline, then snacks are considered just more calories, so you have to be selective in what you give. The only reason you are giving snacks, is to give them a little something to munch on during meals for the fiber-because remember, their nutrition is in the pellets. please find the list below of what I recommend.
YOU WILL NOTICE 2 DIFFERENT BAGS OF FOOD HERE, I FEED THE ACTIVE ADULT TO THE BABIES FROM 4-6 MONTHS OLD, THEN AFTER THEY HAVE BEEN SPAYED OR NEUTERED, I SWAP TO THE ELDER FORMULA AT 6 MONTHS AND UP. THE REASON IS THEIR HORMONE DECREASE CAUSES THEM TO REQUIRE FAR LESS CALORIES. IT HAS THE EXACT SAME VITAMIN/MINERAL CONTENT, JUST MORE FIBER TO MAKE THEM FEEL FULLER, AND A BIT LESS PROTEIN.
IF YOU DO NOT have a TSC (Tractor Supply Store) near you, you can click on the bags pictured here and order directly from the company and have shipped to your door.
Lets take a minute to compare pigs to dogs......My pigs are GENETICALLY bred to be Small, micro teacup pigs....Just like the mini doxi is bred to be a lot smaller than the standard dachshund. ....If you take a micro nano pig and over feed it, it can become TWICE the size it was bred to be. this is not genetic growth...it is unhealthy fat, just like the two dogs pictured! Look at the dog on the right, how much taller and wider do you think he is than the dog on the left? enough said.
This not fair to the animal to give it food whenever it begs for it. The pet has no idea what the outcomes are. It is up to us as responsible pet owners not to set them up for the pain and discomfort that extra weight puts on their spine and joints! I would guess the dog on the left can run and play---while the poor dog on the right , merely struggles to walk and breathe. SAD, and can so easily be prevented......I WANT OWNERS to realize that if you give your pigs food all of the time, they expect it all of the time, and you can not give them treats and unhealthy foods just because they want it.
TYPICALLY, when my babies leave me, they are eating 1/4 cup, twice a day. This is usually sufficient for a healthy body weight (actually a bit above what they require), but the new owner needs to realize some pigs have a faster metabolism than others...so common sense will tell you if the pig looks thin, up the amount by a tablespoon at a time. no need to double food. It takes 3-4 weeks for you to tell an adequate weight gain. LEARN YOUR PIGS BODY. When they look like they are getting heavy, back off of the food a little. IF they look thin, add more--it's not hard to keep them healthy. It has been revealed that breeders with larger genetic pigs, are instructing their customers to feed bare minimum to stunt their pigs growth. This is WRONG. The calories for a genetically small pig, will NOT meet the requirements of a larger breed of pig-and should be adjusted accordingly.
The main reason people overfeed is that they feel like such a tiny amount of the measured pellets at meal-time, just couldn't be enough for their baby to eat....so they give excessive treats, or go over the recommended measured amount. Please read the label below that is on the back of the bag of food, this is proven to meet nutritional guidelines.
SNACKS::::: PIGS NEED TO BE TREATED AS A DIABETIC PERSON WOULD, BEING THEY DO NOT NEED SNACKS THAT JUST CONVERT TO SUGAR IN THE BODY..aka piggy ATKINS diet: I like Celery the best, because it is a great source of fiber, and gives them something to munch on with no harm of sugar conversion. In the greens dept. I will occasionally get Kale, and Romaine Lettuce. Use Kale in moderation due to the high calcium content (can lead to UTI's)especially in males. you can occasionally use treats for rewards, like a few whole grain cheerios.
NOTE: Mazuri pig food is used by zoos and professional organizations. it is designed to be 100% nutritionally complete for your pig, so snacks are just added treats. you are not trying to give snacks or mid day meals to meet nutritional requirements. the Mazuri takes care of that. Snacks are rewards. It is no different than a dog owner sticking to the "dog food" only, for the health of the animal, and saying NO to table food.
REMEMBER: FISH FOOD IS FOR FISH, DOG FOOD IS FOR DOGS, AND MINI PIG FOOD IS DESIGNED FOR MINI PIGS. There are reasons we stress not to feed dog and cat food. pigs love it, but it is not good for them.
